Understanding

Psalms 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth forever. Doing, literally carrying out, God's commands is necessary for a person to get understanding. We need to obey even though we don't fully understand. The more of God's commands we do, the greater understanding of the things of God and His Word. When a person chooses to not do one of God's commands, God takes away some of that person's understanding. That loss of understanding often results in the person not doing another command. Thus begins a downward spiritual decline of disobedience and less and less understanding. Psalms 119:99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. Understanding is greatly increased by studying and meditating on the testimonies/stories in the Bible. We gain understanding by meditating on the successes and failures that God tells us in the Bible. God has chosen the details of the accounts to share with us; so that we gain the understanding He wants us to have. Teachers have a limited role in giving another spiritual understanding. Our goal must not be to teach others, but to show them how to meditate on God's Word for themselves to get understanding.
