Understanding

Psalms 119:169 Let my cry come near before thee, O LORD: give me understanding according to thy word. It's important that we cry out to God for understanding. We do not derive understanding from our inner selves, but only from God. Spiritual understanding comes from God and His Word and not from other people. We can tell what true understanding is, because it will line up with God's Word. We need to focus on "leading people to the pasture" rather than on feeding them. What we need to do is give them the commands and give them the resources to understand the commands, such as cross-references, but not do all their thinking for them. We need to teach people to call out to God for spiritual understanding. Exodus 31:3 And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, Understanding is a gift from God It is the Holy Spirit that gives us understanding.
